The 29th annual Sneads Ferry King Mackerel Tournament took place on August 14-15 this year at the New River Marina. Choppy seas and windy skies accompanied 103 boats on their quests to fish out smoker king mackerel. Despite COVID-19, the event still managed to maintain its usual turnout of 100+ boats.
Winning the first place trophy for their 44.5 lb. king was Capt. John E. Lewis and Debbie Priddy, of Team Second Chanze out of Morehead City. Their big king also awarded Lewis and Priddy first place in the Overall TWT, the Small Boat TWT, the Single Engine TWT, the High Roller TWT, and individually, the Lady and Senior Angler titles. The pair has fished this tournament in the past and also took first place back in 2018.
The second place team was “Reel Blessed” from Sneads Ferry, led by Capt. Kevin Norris. They weighed in a 41.66 lb. king.
Third place went to Capt. Chris K. Matthis and Team Berry Fishy, from Clinton, NC, for their king weighing in at 37.57 lbs. The 2020 Junior Angler champion was Georgia Eakins, also onboard Team Berry Fishy.
The second place Junior Angler award went to Jacob Whitesell from Team Chain Smoker out of Morehead City for weighing in a 31.77 lb. king mackerel, and scoring third place in the Junior Angler category was Selena Chrismon, from Team FishAnn out of Clayton, NC, for the 25.31 lb. king they reeled in.
As an SKA-sanctioned event hosted by the Rotary Club of Sneads Ferry, this tournament is a highly awaited chance for tournament king anglers on the eastern coast of North Carolina to get out and get their lines wet. Over $40,000 in prize money was distributed across the leaderboard thanks to major sponsors that include Coastal Bank & Trust, Pluris, Onslow County, Power Marine Outfitters, JOEMC, & C-Phase Services.
The proceeds made by the Rotary Club get recycled back into the community by funding services such as taking families Christmas shopping, feeding the elderly at Thanksgiving, and awarding scholarships to students.
