The King of the Cape Open King Mackerel Tournament, sponsored primarily by Bone Suckin’ Sauce, took place the end of September in Beaufort. With a chilly, late September breeze keeping anglers cool, the hunt was on for a winning king.
The waters churned as 47 teams raced to find a trophy king to bring back to Town Creek Marina, the host site. This year, first through third place winners were awarded monetary prizes.
Team “She Said Yes, AGAIN,” from Atlantic Beach, NC, took home the first place win with a hefty king mackerel weighing in at 41.85 lbs. For team members Jamie Nelms, Billy Cole, Alex Chandler, Mike Hoover, and Cruz Nelms, this was their third top ten placement in a tournament this season.
They reeled in their winning catch on Saturday, the first of two open fishing days, and brought it to the scales to surprisingly discover that it was the largest fish at the end of this first of two fishing days.
With bated breath, they fished again on Sunday, catching nothing noteworthy of their own. Luckily for them, other teams had a productive Sunday, just not quite productive enough, and the boys of “She Said Yes, AGAIN” went home with the first place trophy.
Adam Tosto, of Team “Honeybun,” came in a close second place with another whopper of a king. Theirs weighed in at 40.89 lbs. and was caught on Sunday.
Harvey Houpes III and his teammates of “Mom Said No” scored third place with another big king caught on Sunday. They brought to scales a king weighing in at 39.86 lbs.
Mark Henderson, from Team “Liquid Fire,” scored fourth place with an impressive king mackerel weighing in at 38.2 lbs., also caught on Sunday.
Danny Rawls and Team “Wildcat/Hawg Wild” caught a 38.16 pounder on Sunday that ultimately won them fifth place.
As this yearly event is not for profit, all tournament proceeds went to the Methodist Home for Children.
