Betty, of TW’s Tackle, reports that anglers have been catching some bluefish, sea mullet, croaker, flounder, and other bottom feeders from the local surf over the past week.
Plenty of bluefish are striking Gotcha plugs and other metal lures that anglers are working from the pier, and some spanish mackerel have been mixed in.
Spadefish are also feeding around the piers and will take pieces of shrimp fished on small hooks.
More spanish mackerel and bluefish are falling for small spoons that anglers are trolling around Oregon Inlet and in the ocean and sound.
Bottom fishing at nearshore structure in the ocean is producing plenty of action with sea bass, triggerfish, and amberjacks.
Offshore trollers continue to report excellent catches of yellowfin tuna and dolphin while trolling ballyhoo and skirted lures. A few wahoo have been in the mix, and boats have also released several sailfish and white and blue marlin recently.
Bill, of Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, reports that boats are regularly landing limits of dolphin while trolling ballyhoo and bailing smaller fish on chunk baits.
Good numbers of yellowfin tuna are still feeding offshore as well, although they’ve been a bit scattered. Some wahoo, blue and white marlin, and sailfish have also been in the mix for the offshore fleet.
Bottom fishing at structure closer to the beaches is producing plenty of action with black sea bass and triggerfish.
A few cobia are still in the area, and boats landed several last week.
Inshore anglers are catching big numbers of speckled trout in the sound.
Dave, of Skiligal Sportfishing, reports that there’s been an excellent billfish bite lately, with many white marlin releases, some sailfish, and decent numbers of blue marlin showing up in the spread recently.
Plenty of dolphin are still providing action offshore, and boats targeting tuna have had good catches north of the Tuna Hole.
Ballyhoo paired with skirted trolling lures are fooling the lion’s share of the offshore gamefish.
Mike, of Jennette’s Pier, reports that anglers are connecting with bluefish and a few spanish mackerel while working Gotcha plugs from the pier.
Some spot, sea mullet, croaker, spadefish, and other bottom feeders are taking an interest in double hook rigs baited with shrimp and squid.
Live baiters had some action last week, losing a suspected cobia after a long fight and landing and releasing a large jack crevalle.
Keith, of Corolla Bait and Tackle, reports that surf casters are hooking good numbers of sea mullet, spot, croaker, and bluefish while bottom fishing with shrimp and cut baits.
The blues and spanish mackerel are feeding within range of surf casters in the early mornings, and anglers are hooking both while working a variety of metal lures.
Offshore trips are still producing plenty of action with yellowfin tuna and dolphin. Skirted ballyhoo are tempting bites from both of the tasty blue water predators.
