Blue Water Candy Mahi Mauler
With two decades of hook-and-line commercial fishing experience under his belt, Hampstead’s Jodie Gay has gambled his paycheck on the blue water more than once. The result of all that time on the water is more than a little knowledge about what does and doesn’t put fish in the box and money in the bank, and he’s taken that experience from the sea to the shop with Blue Water Candy Lures, the tackle company he’s been running for a decade since retiring from the commercial game.
Always innovating new ways to help anglers to catch more fish, the company has combined a molded soft plastic squid with one of their flashy Bling skirts to create a new weapon in the arsenal of anglers seeking dolphin, blackfin tuna, sailfish, and other blue water predators.
Named the Mahi Mauler, the new lure can be trolled bare or have a rigged ballyhoo or squid strip pinned on the hook for realistic tail action and to add some scent to further entice bites. The Bling material, which has proven highly effective on the company’s king mackerel skirts, adds additional flash to the time-tested soft squid to call in fish from a distance in clear offshore waters.
Three flashy colors are offered in the new lure so far—blue with chartreuse Bling, pink with chartreuse Bling, and chartreuse with pink Bling. They’re rigged on a chafe-protected mono leader with an 8/0 Mustad hook for durability and longevity through many hard strikes and tough battles.
