Penn has been a longstanding leader in the saltwater tackle market for nearly as long as the market has existed, and with good reason—their products have a proven track record of dependable service and reliability. New for 2013, the company’s Conflict spinning reel line is designed for inshore anglers looking for top-line performance in a reel that doesn’t break the bank.
Entering the company’s line just above their popular Battle reel, the Conflict incorporates some of the reel’s most popular features with a host of new upgrades to make the reel lighter, stronger, and capable of putting out some serious drag pressure, perfect for anglers pursuing large fish on lighter gear with braided lines.
An attractive black on black/gray color scheme is the first think anglers will notice about the Conflict, and that finish is applied to an aluminum body and sideplate designed with strength and rigidity in mind. High strength graphite makes up the rotors of the 1000-4000 size reels, with an aluminum rotor with rotor brake on the larger models.
Seven stainless-steel ball bearings along with a one-way Infinite Anti-Reverse bearing keep the reel operating as smooth as it looks.
A machine-cut bronze main gear and hardened stainless pinion gear add additional strength to the new reels.
With oversized HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers and a design that utilizes both sides of the washer, the Conflicts put out maximum drag capacities ranging from 13 lbs. for the smaller models to 33 lbs. for the 8000 size reel. With those numbers, the Conflicts practically beg to be spooled up with high-strength braided lines.
To that end, they feature Penn’s Superline Spool, a design that incorporates a grippy material on the spool center which eliminates the need to use monofilament backing or wrap tape around a spool before filling it with braid.
When that line’s disappearing at an alarming rate to an unseen fish, anglers can confidently check how much line is left with the Line Capacity Rings on the spool’s base—markers that let anglers know when they’re down to 2/3 or 1/3 of their full spool.
Offered in sizes that cover everything from casting tiny lures for spike speckled trout or shad to chasing tarpon and cobia, or if your game is offshore jigging and popping, there’s a Conflict waiting for your next spinning reel application.
